I got a text last night from SAUCE's own Kelly Baker the other night that had this picture of what he's been doing lately. Concrete sculptures..... This one is so rad! It's a lamp that pays homage to pool skating. But the best thing about this lamp is the history within that piece of coping that tops it. This is a piece from the "Dog Chark" ramp in Tempe, Az. The ramp eventually got torn down, but the peices have been re-used in other projects involved with heavy ripping. When they had the "Junk Jam" in Phx. The coping was used on the vert quarter pipe which saw some heavy rippage during the event. And when the event was done, it was applied to "Tucker's Ramp" till' it met it's demise a year later.
Then eventually it arrived at our house, and adorned the infamous "Chicken Ramp", where it continued to recieve a heavy beating from skaters all over. We beat that shit up!!!
When we moved, we gave a peice to all that had history with this coping, and Baker decided to pay homage by topping this killer lamp he made. I know it's silly to be hyped on an inanimate object like this, but I love that it has seen so much creativity over the years, and it continues to shed light on an otherwise dark time. Yeah Baker!! Keep on killin' it!!
McNair, I still have your piece. The two of you will be reunited eventually.

NW Motorcycle / Skate tour with IRON MAIDEN

It's pouring rain at this moment in the NW and all I can think about is riding my Motorcycle to any of the many skate spots up here to shred and hang with the homies!! Well summer will be here soon and coming with it is IRON MAIDEN!!!! Lets shred the NW on Bikes (and cars, trucks, and vans), and boards with the homies and end it all on a good note in Auburn, WA Monday July 30 with IRON MAIDEN!!!! The plan is to roam around the NW's Puget Sound and skate, camp, party, and have a good time this summer!! All are welcome. Tickets for Iron Maiden go on sale March 2nd or 3rd. Lawn tix shouldn't be too spendy and if you're riding an MC the gas money you'll save will buy your ticket to Rock!!
Get those bikes back together and lets roll!!! No bike, No prob - Drive a car!!

I've known Cody for quite some time now. We lived one neighborhood away from each other in Tempe, Arizona and would frequently skate ABCO with the homies. We met probably around 1986-87ish as he was better known as "The G&S Wonder Kid" He musta been around 9 years old when riding for the same company as Neil Blender, Chris Miller, Billy Ruff, ect....
Yup, we grew up in the Launch Ramp days doing 360 Judos, Huge ollie airs, Methods, Japans, and yes.....We put that ramp up the the walls and got down! Ah the good ol days! Well, 25+ years later, we still hang and skate together, play some music and put that Ol'Launch Ramp up to the walls. Sure, we've gotten older and life around us has changed, but one thing that hasn't.......Is the good times being had on a skateboard with a good ol launch ramp, some curbs, and the homies on a lazy "Slappie Sunday" I am fully convinced that the skateboard is the key to staying Strong, Healthy and Young!

Bikes and Boards are the BEST combo! Both posses the freedom of individuality, thrill of life and death situations, both fun when playing in traffic, creativity, and best of all......NO RULES! Portland's weather for February has been nothing short of KILLER!! Lots of rolling both bikes and boards so far! In most cases the board gets priority over bikes, but this weekend was a little different as our weather here in PDX has been exceptional and it was just a great feeling to get out and session the streets on my "Iron Shred Sled" (along with lots of other Portlanders) and make a couple visits to this years "The ONE Motorcycle Show" to drool over the collection of sick Bobbers, chops, vintage, cafe racers, wild, and historical bikes. Now in it's 3rd year, Portland's "The ONE Motorcycle Show" is growing in popularity as the collection keeps getting bigger and better so they have extended the show to two full days of gathering, drooling, viewing, drinking, lurking, and riding. A blast and good for inspiration to get out there and do what feels good, Build and Ride! Check the photos of some of the neat motorbikes that were present and don't forget to wipe that drool from your face.........
Now strap your board to your bike and get out there and Roll Free!

Thanks to Pod for letting me post this here and post more Okie/wherever stuff in the future. I didn't want to post this video because I have a part in it, but more because it's a super rad video that I happen to have a part in (with a cameo from my little buddy- Killa I). Basically I had a great time filming for this because I'd set boundaries for myself and it made things interesting- an all street part, all filmed in my little crappy town (Ponca City, OK). It was a personal goal and a way to tell the younger kids- "look I suck and I went and made a video part of just street skating, so you don't have to go to the park EVERY day."

Digable Planets' Craig Irving Makes His Comeback as Cee-Knowledge

Craig Irving didn’t grab the mic until his freshman year of college at Howard University. There, he met a Philly kid named DJ Trouble Trev and they started a group called the O.S.A.G.E. (Out for Sex And Gettin’ Exotic) Crew, named after the West Philly street where the MOVE house was bombed in 1985.
After graduation, Irving returned home to Philly—where, as a teen in the ’80s, he’d tape Lady B’s rap radio shows—and met a like-minded MC named Ishmael Butler who was living with his grandmother near West Oak Lane and working at Reading Terminal. “We sat around my grandmother’s house [in Germantown] listening to music for hours,” says Irving, then a member of the Dread Poet’s Society.
Soon after, Irving became Doodlebug. Ishmael became Butterfly. Mary Ann Vieira, an MC who was Irving’s girlfriend at the time, became Ladybug. Digable Planets was born.
The standard Planets narrative glosses over Irving’s Philly connection. But the trio’s jazz and soul- powered debut, 1993’s Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), carries the torch of the city’s frequently under-appreciated black music history. Burning throughout it are the sounds of Philly jazz cats Lee Morgan and John Coltrane, the intergalactic Afrotopia of Sun Ra Arkestra, Kenneth Gamble’s and Leon Huff’s soul, and Philly’s thriving 1980s hip-hop spirit. Planets settled in New York City, and their tongue-twisting verses frequently referenced Brooklyn, but Doodlebug ensured that Philly blood flowed through the Insect Tribe’s veins.
Beating out Snoop Doggy Dogg & Dr. Dre, Arrested Development, Naughty By Nature and Cypress Hill, Planets won the 1993 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group for the hit song “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat).” If you’re alive right now, you know the hook.
Planets dropped Blowout Comb the next year. It was as smooth as Reachin’, more funky than jazzy, but significantly gloomier and overtly militant—it marked the death of slick and the rebirth of Huey Newton. It didn’t take off like Reachin’. Perhaps it was too politically radical at a time when gangster-rap was all the rage, or maybe it was the lack of a promotional push from Pendulum/Elektra, whose partnership deteriorated leading up to the release date. Citing “creative differences,” Planets split in 1995.
“We went our separate ways,” says Irving. “I didn’t know what to do. I stopped making music, cut my dreads and considered getting a real job ... But then I started gettin’ that music feeling again.”
Now calling himself Cee-Knowledge (he’d done so at least as early as Blowout), Irving reappeared in Philly in the early 2000s. In 2001, he visited the Sun Ra house in Germantown for the first time, and collaborated with Marshall Allen and other Arkestra members on a 12-inch called Space Is The Place.
Picking up where Blowout left off, the tracks kicked ethereal vibes and live jazz-funk instrumentation over which Cee dropped knowledge about “space hustles” and saving planet Earth.
A surprise phone call in 2005 led to Planets’ first reunion, and dates in Europe and the U.S. followed, including sets at the Coachella and Lollapalooza music festivals. “I was shocked people remembered us,” Irving says. “Everyone normally jumps onto the next trend quick, but people were still hungry for our sound.” The demand was there, but Planets once again imploded after a backstage blowout at Red Bull’s Big Tune producer competition in 2008.
Back in his hometown of Seattle, Butterfly/Butler began making music as Shabazz Palaces. He signed with Sub Pop, and released Black Up last year. A heady, Afro-futurist collage, it was far-out and psychedelic—an experimental hip-hop album praised by both indie and hip-hop critics. A few months later, Cee-Knowledge also released his strongest post-Planets album yet, Futuristic Sci-Fi, which combined spaced-out experimentation and Golden Age swagger. Both albums had Planets written all over them.
Critics overlooked the way-underground Futuristic, but Black Up got Planets buzzing again in the press. The Internet exploded at the close of 2011 with rumors that Planets were uniting for a new studio album. While talks are underway, nothing’s confirmed. “I’m down, no doubt,” says Irving about another reunion. “Planets was the best time of my life, but a gift and a curse. As a musician, I wanna spread my wings and not always be stuck as ‘that Digable Planets dude.’ I wanna try new things and experiment.”
It’s uncertain whether a Planets tour and new album will transpire, but Irving’s definitely back, and his live hip-hop group, the Cosmic Funk Orchestra, is almost finished recording their debut album.
“I’m trying to get my foothold back on the Philly scene again,” he says. “The 215 makes me who I am. I’ve lived in a few places, but no matter where I was, Philly was always in me. I took Philly everywhere I went. My music’s always been rooted here.”

Just last week he, jihad and alex made the trip just to skate a indoor mini for a couple hours. good men they are. Well b.j. rips (except when hes hungover) and chances are if your from the northwest you have rolled around with him either here or there. whatever. heres a edit i filmed of him one day this fall at the college campus in bellingham. a skateboard and a friend. what else is there?

Skate or Die

Sometimes skating just doesn't involve the use of your board but rather the will to shred by any means necessary. Even if it means taking a trip down memory lane via use of classic video games. I remember back in Jr High putting my quarter up on the classic 720 arcade game and patiently awaiting my turn to shred at the local bowling alley. The sessions were often crowded with the local jean jacket wearing Hessians from my apartment complex who wanted nothing more than to smoke hella cigs and shred their way into the "Skate City Hall of Fame"

Fast forward 26years (from 1986) and I've found one of the many perfect ways to deal with a rained out session. A sick session of 720 located at "Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade" here in downtown Portland, Oregon. Sure you could get together with some homies and skate the local parking garage or head to the bridge and get it going there. But sometimes I just get the urge to haul ass through the perfect skateable cityscape spinning 720's, 1080's, Bonlesses and outrunning a swarm of angry Bees prompted by the voice from above "SKATE OR DIE" while racing for your life to the local skatepark in hopes to cash in a ticket to ride. Now this is no way to substitute for the real thing but sometimes it's just fun to get out there a drop a good 'ol fashioned quarter into a slot for some good cheap shredding fun while waiting for drier weather to appear in the forecast. Get some!

“You gotta SLAP!!” (Then he smacked his two hands together like you’d do if you were demonstrating to someone how hard the last guy slammed whilst attempting a 720 spine transfer). 1987. The overly-enthusiastic instructor was NOT Mike Watt, nor anyone anywhere near his status of significance to skateboarding or punk rock. Rather, he was a really rad local skater who lived one neighborhood north of mine. The whole day I had been attempting to learn slappies on “his curb” -- the perfect, 25-foot long, 3” high, red-painted, daily loved with Sex Wax and skateboarders wanting nothing more than to hit it just right and slappie the whole 25 feet.

I’d like to believe that the Sony Walkman that I always rocked back in the day, had my fIREHOSE tape, 'Ragin’ Full On' in it this day, and in the front of my mind I had the ability to flow as smooth as Natas Kaupas during his famous 'Wheels of Fire' ollie-to-720-fire-hydrant-spin-while-Brave-Captain-steadied-my-footwork, but more than likely my eventual success of nailing the 20+ foot slappie curb was probably the result of all the positive variables, which embody and exemplify both skateboarding and punk rock till this day -- hard work, determination, creativity, and the will to overcome at all cost. Fortunately for skateboarding and punk rock, we are all blessed with the great anomaly of a man who not only old schoolers can claim influence from, but as he is still kicking ass and taking names, nearing his 70th world tour (and 53rd birthday!), Mike Watt is arguably one of the most influential “O.G.s” of punk rock who, throughout his career has stoked the fires of skaters and musicians to keep pushing the limits of what is known as “possible”. Anyone who has “witnessed” his greatness perform even once, regardless of how rad and dedicated you “think” you are, if honest with yourself, has been simultaneously humbled, intimidated, and influenced by his level of energy as well as his cohesiveness and mutual respect for his band mates.

Not being one to speak for or pedestal anyone or anything, nor push an agenda on my readers.... without further ado, I give you Mike Watt, in his own words:

Sauce: I wanted to ask you what your thoughts are on punk rock and skateboarding -- the parallels between the two.

Watt: You don’t need a lot of money right? A board -- takes to do it, which is kind of an adventure. The idea that you can develop your own style and stuff. I know there’s a little difference between decks and trucks. It’s kind of a level playing field [you] just have to get one that’s decent. From there it’s all the human part. The punk thing too: You know, you just get a drum set and bass that works good enough. then it’s what you can do after. So i see the parallels. A lot of it is do it yourself, you know? For me, I like the ideology: if you fall down, you have to get up. You cant talk your way back up, you actually have to pick yourself up and give it another go! It’s kind of a group, you can do it with a lot of people you can inspire each other. But it’s kinda obvious if you start copying. There’s just a lot of parallels. It’s only natural i think...

I’m friends with Tony Alva and he told me about the closeness of the thing, having to do pools in people’s back yards. Punk gigs were in peoples yards.

Get this -- this summer I did a gig in Orange County, in a house. Bunch of skaters who drained the pool. It was dads and their sons, generations. You didn’t have that in older days. This is a newer kinda of thing. So, I think it isn’t only market forces. I think there were traditions building up, and handed down. And yeah, the merch thing happened too. But even if it wouldn’t have, there would have still been traditions handed down. People felt it in their blood, so it was going to get handed down.

What more, or what less is stuff is in-between you and your endeavor than a person with a skateboard -- there’s hardly anything in between. Experience is very visceral, it’s right there. It doesn’t have to be that abstracted to you or explained to you or sold to you so much. Told you, there’s little variation in these boards. I remember I was a boy, in fact, maybe it was a big distinction in certain ways, you had to have urethane wheels or you couldn't go in the streets. So even the smallest rocks.. so dude’s stayed on sidewalks. And on hills, you sat on them, if you can imagine sitting on them because to keep your weight on them. So things changed when the rubber, urethane, so you could go in the street. So i will say that that okay that technology had to change. Like nowadays the way you can can make records in your room. So there’s small things that way. But as far as the big ethic, it’s about the spirit and the fucking hankering to people to express themselves.

Sauce: .... and rebel as well!

Watt: It doesn’t seem like voting with dollars. It’s just trying to getting art out. To me, a move on a skateboard is a personal statement about a trippy kind of art. It might not be institutionalized in an academic sense but I know from witnessing it and seeing cats, it’s a vital thing, it’s a life force. And what is art you know? It’s about transcending and getting over the confines of a situation, economy, mind set, ideology. There can be some academia to it because these dudes, you can tell, these cats, like Ray Barbee: they develop science about it this shit. Of course they keep it in the natural thing. It’s not just in a lab, they’re actually doing it in the streets. That’s the important thing, it’s the experience.

Sauce: How was it when Santa Cruz approached you to do Wheels on Fire, with Natas Kaupas, and fIREHOSE did brave captain..?

Watt: Well they asked, they asked!

Sauce: Was that the first time you’d been asked, as a member of a band, because I don’t remember Minutemen being on any skateboarding video?

Watt: This thing with the skate guys was a different thing, much different than Minutemen doing the thing “No Picnic” (“This Ain’t No Picnic was a Minutemen music video that was shot in black and white for $600, and got some airplay on MTV in the mid-1980’s). This other thing was like, wow, we like what they’re doing in this scene we see parallels in our own scene, so you want us to do some music to some of your moves. Much respect.

Later on, I met cats in Europe who learned how to skate by watching those videos. A very influential thing. But i didn’t know at the time I just liked the integrity, the feel of them they just that they just seemed like straight up cats. Kinda coming from where we were coming from. I was working a bass and they were working a skateboard. So a little different on the means, but not on the means.

Sauce: fIREHOSE, at that point was, as opposed to Minutemen, more fluid; had an artistic fluidity. The songs were longer and prior to that (Wheels on Fire) skate videos had real hardcore punk soundtracks, like Black Flag, etc, whereas in ’86, when Ragin’ full on/ Brave Captain was out and it got the nod for the Natas part in the “’88 Wheels of Fire video, then all of a sudden then it didn’t have to be about “rah rah rah” -- you know punk rock -- it could be about fluid, artistic expression, because [in the late 1980’s] skateboarding had become about fluid, original expression, like the music of fIREHOSE.

Watt: Well, we never really thought about punk was a style of music, we thought of it as kind of a state of mind, like there wasn’t one way to skate. You know what i mean? That was just the springboard and after that it what was the person took to it. Their experience brought to it. We lost D. Boon. Then Edward became the new mayor. Something about D. Boon, Edward much respected him.

People get carried away with things that are self important. So uh, I don’t put blame or hurt on anybody. That’s the reality. Breath of fresh air I get from watching somebody skating and lighting it up you know? There’s something about it you know? It’s expression, not posing, it’s natural. And it gives me confidence to try to get it together on the bass. Brian Brannon from JFA wrote a column on the Thrasher, and I wrote him a column once about trying to work my base like skateboard.

Sauce: I think when people saw Natas Kaupas doing the 720 on the fire hydrant on Wheels of Fire, and heard Brave Captain, that’s when skateboarders really took attention and asked, who’s this fIREHOSE? Who the fuck is fIREHOSE? And that’s really when everyone I was skating with was all about fIREHOSE, because it was a true, new real expression.

Watt: It was difficult for me because I was having to play without D. Boon. I had George Hurley who I’d played with for 14 years, and Ed Crawford -- a lot of it was about other cats. that’s what I’m saying: a lot of society is trying to say “you you you” as a self centered thing, but that song [Brave Captain] came out of a very difficult time for me. So for some cat to work his skateboard who could relate to that, that was very special to me, because it was kind of a personal dilemma to me because what do I do without my buddy [D. Boon]? Well, music. Try try! Eddie wants to try, Georgie wants to try. And I try with them. And those cats (skaters) went and did that and shared with us in a trippy way, they shared with us, connected with us. It was big for me.

Sauce: I think the skateboarding community is blessed to have fIREHOSE to utilize as a creative outlet as music to get stoked to go skate to. Just today, I was telling someone that I was interviewing Mike Watt and he told me that he had “If’n” in his tape deck and that he was going to go skateboarding. It’s [fIREHOSE] is not dying. So it lends itself to the idea that you can have real new expression with every experience.

Watt: You can write a very original story, but never invent a single word. It’s the same thing as the music and the skate. It’s a lot of interpretation. It’s the inner voice trying to come out and express. But of course it’s through the community. It’s a weird thing, it’s trippy.

Skaters are pretty notorious for embracing the D.I.Y. ethic. You know, get it done by any means necessary so you can skate and have a good time. Don't wait around for someone to hold your hand and do it for you. Just have fun and GO DO IT!! In this case, Wrex Cook and a handful of close friends take it upon themselves to to dig out and skate their backyard pool! They had no idea of what the pool would look like or if it would even be good. Thats the chance you gotta take sometimes. Though as history shows us, a high percentage of Arizona pools are good skateable gems!! So with that fact lying in the back of their minds, the work was put in via Hand shovels and a tractor. If there is a will, there is a way! The work that was put into "The Relic" paid off as this pool was a good one! Pointing more towards the Gnarly side of pools this one saw a lot of grinds, airs and photographs and was enjoyed by many before it's refilling a couple years later! Thanx Wrex and friends for the D.I.Y. stoke!!

Shark Bait #44

The great thing about making zines is that there are no rules and you get to meet a lot of like minded folks who take it upon themselves to stoke the SHRED in their own way via printed material (and digital material like the SAUCE you are visiting now). I met Brad Hayes a handful of years ago via the web / US postal through zine trades. I sent him a copy of SAUCE and in return I have gotten numerous issues of his killer zine, "Shark Bait" hailing from Oklahoma aka "Sharklahoma USA". Now I have received a good handful of Brad's publication and each one is filled with great words and photos of inspiring skateboarding. Everything from music, local spots, local rippers, and even some guest appearances from the big guns like this issue #44, Karma Tsocheff and John Cardiel! Oh did I just say issue #44?!?! Yup, Brad has been consistently fueling the need to SHRED for 44 issues!!!! Man, now that's "Kicking Out the Jams"!!!!!! Every issue is filled with tons of good black and white material in a digest (5.5" x 8.5") format that is easy to carry in your pocket and take out to view while sipping on an ice cold beverage after killing yourself at the local spot. Keep an eye out For Shark Bait in your neck of the woods or stop by the website and pick up a copy and show your support for those who keep the Shred alive!

Thing Bad #8

Its always a treat to get a new issue of "Thing Bad" in the mail! In my opinion, this is probably the BEST zine out there to date! Not to take away from all the other SICK zines out there, this one is in a class of its own following or rather leading the way in D.I.Y. fashion. The homie, Darren of the "Dream Destroyers" and "Scabs AZ" has an artistic view on life and it shows with his zine. Each issue of "Thing Bad" is hand made! Yes, EACH ONE is hand sewn, photo copied, screen printed, painted and filled with tons of neat photos shot with a FILM camera and plenty of words about traveling abroad with a skateboard. Darren not only puts together a sick zine by hand but also RIPS on his skateboard and is down to skate just about anything! In a world polluted with cheap lame imitations of mas produced garbage it's such a relief to know that there are folks out there who CARE about what they love and don't give a fuck about anyone elses opinions! "Thing Bad" is a WINNER in my book!! Keep an eye out for this one and any other issues out there and hopefully you are lucky enough to get your paws on one as these hand made gems that are hard to come by simply because they are NOT mas produced.

A miniature Mexican beast found itself lost under the Burnside Bridge many moons ago. The locals named it 'Lil' John', but alcohol shifted it into a bruised and bloody musical terror, nicknamed 'the CHUPACABRA'. A few semi-skilled musicians fearlessly recruited him as the worlds latest, un-greatest frontman. Having only played less than a handful of shows (and practiced even less), rabid fans insist on blowing it everywhere they go. At their first Skate Rock show chaos erupted and spilled out onto the streets, leaving the headline bands to try and sift through the remaining debris of an empty venue. Nobody knows anything else about this mysterious band, but according to frontman LJ, "We've already broke-up AGAIN! and why wouldn't we?!?! If you're not have’n fun, what are you have’n? NOT FUN." Consequently, the band only re-unites for the occasional gig, by popular demand. Their motto appears to be solely one of 'having fun'. As they put it; only coaches and parents care about 'practice'. Guitarist, King-of-the-shitty claims,"After three practices, and two shows, we realized other bands were too intimidated to share a bill with us." Lead bassist, No1 agreed,"Yep. We had to stop practicing after that, fearing we'd end up turning pro. By the way, can I get a...(mumbling)." King-of-the-shitty continues,"Practice is for pros. We only care about bros and hoes! By the way, do you got a....(mumbling)."
CHUPACABRA have now played more shows than they have had practices, and have recently been sighted playing backyard birthday parties for young children, oddly enough. With offensive song titles such as Where the Cougars At?, the Sprinklahh, and Little Yum-Yums, and lyrics literally written in blood on the walls of their 'band room'. Its hard to believe anyone would invite them to play anywhere, or care about the bands poor quality (how bad they suck). "Purr-fect , we are 'Suck Rock' anyways!! We fucking invented our own genre, and its OURS. So we don’t want anyone try’n to bite our shit." claims No1. CHUPACABRA drummer, Spike Dartsmun could not be revived for comment. LJ states, "If I'm not happy, it's not happen’n!" Which may explain why the band has sworn to never play again...until their next show.

A Hopeless Case Of A Kid In Denial

Wow! Sauce has officially gone digital and I cant believe that the mag made it as long as it did in print! A big part of my life (and I have the tattoo to prove it), the FREE print format was also a big story in itself for a lot of contributors along the way, and the skaters and artists and musicians that graced it's pages. I mean, this little project went from a black and white coffee table center piece to a tight and compact full color zine with sick photos and a little creative writing thrown in that would fit nicely on the back of the crapper for a couple of visits (and would always find it's way back to the coffee table).
Fuck, eleven issues, free for you, in a timespan of just over six years, delivering content from the Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, Middleast (yup!), and all parts between, one can learn a lot about the world through skateboarding.
And the best part of it all, is that it's not over. And while you're probably going to be better off scoping pools and figuring out a security guard's schedule before the next issue arrives at your shop, now you don't have to. While you're skating the internet you can always hit up the SauceBox spot.
So to usher in the digital age, here is a couple of 35mm photos of tricks done at a spot you've seen countless times, just maybe not by these cats. Check back often and visit the store, you'll be stoked!

Well I think it should be called "Blowing It Ale" a nice strong, smooth, full hop tasting brew. How about "Beat it Kook! Ale", Or maybe "DIY Ale"? Legendary Burnside skatepark celebrated its 21st anniversary on Halloween night and to commemorate the milestone, a nearby Portland, Ore., brewery is busy whipping up a special batch that could eventually find its way to thirsty beer-lovers across the country.

For the past few weeks, Burnside's shot-callers -- Mark "Red" Scott, Chuck Willis, and Sage Bolyard -- have been meeting with the founders of Burnside Brewing Company. The 15-tank operation and its pub are located a few blocks east of the skatepark, and its brewmaster, Jason McAdams, grew up skating Burnside.

"At this point, you can definitely say that we have a love connection with the brewery," says Bolyard, who started skating and building at the renegade spot when it wasn't much more than a DIY concrete bank up against an existing wall beneath the eastern hallow of Burnside Bridge. "But we haven't narrowed down the beer itself, and we don't have any graphics for the bottle yet."

"It's something we're all interested in doing," says Jay Gilbert, a partner at the brewery, which opened its doors just 10 month ago. "Now we're in the process of wracking our brains for a beer style and doing some test batches. We're thinking something more aggressive, with a higher alcohol content and a full-hop style. And we're hoping by spring to get label approval to sell 22-ounce bottles in and around Portland at first, with [wider distribution after that]."

Gilbert added that the brewery intends to funnel some of the earnings from the sale of the beer back into the park, which recently secured status as a 501(c) nonprofit.

"Being able to pair ourselves up with such a legendary space is pretty special, and we think it'd be cool to get some funds back to the park for concrete patching and other maintenance," Gilbert says. "We basically would like to help keep it up and running for another 21 years."

One of the best things about skating AZ besides all of the empty pools are DITCHES! We ended up finding this one within the city limits. A little tight at first and as the legs loosened up the trix started to flow. Ollies, tailslides, no complies, ect. Oh and a bonus slappie curb close by. Just about anything Frontside will throw you into an instant stylish move. The first time I saw the Gonz do a f/s boardslide I instantly thought STYLE and that was like 25 years ago or something. Well as most of you know, by now, SAUCE is going to be out of print for awhile due to our crappy economy and going "On Line" isn't exactly how we'd like to keep doing this, but changing and adapting to the forever changing world is just simply what we gotta do. Freestyle Fellowship (FF) consists of 5 members; Aceyalone, Myka Nyne, Self Jupiter, PEACE, and DJ Kiilu all with an impressive rap sheet of Hip Hop accomplishments. The groups first album release, "To whom it May Concern", around 1991 got them recognized through underground hip hop mix tape trading community. (I actually got a hold of one of these in early 1992 from a friend out of the trunk of his car in a Tower Records parking lot). Later, sometime in 1993, FF's second release, "Innercity Griots" was released on 4th and B'Way records. This was the album that really put them and the Project Blowed up on the hip hop map. An instant CLASSIC, still popular today. As time passed and Hip Hop continued to grow and mature so did the 5 members of FF. Each embarked on personal musical missions of solo careers producing many more influential albums each important to the growth and history of Hip Hop. Later in 2001 FF put together their third album, "Temptations". Another good album by the group showing that they can hang with the changing times and lyrical flows. More solo projects by each member brings us up to date, 2011 with their forth FF album release, "The Promise" and a West Coast Tour bringing them up to the North West (Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington) where I was able to catch their INCREDIBLE set at Seattle's Show Box venue. Playing most of their classics and stuff from their newest album. Going strong for 20 years, FF still packs a powerful and influential punch for the underground Hip Hop scene. As stated nearly 20 years ago in the final track of their first album "To Whom It May Concern" that they will "never fall the fuck off.....we promise" still holds true by todays standards and I think that these fellas are still "Way ahead of the Hip Hop times" even the material that is 20 years old! Now thats Real Hip Hop!

This year is Portland's BURNSIDE skatepark's 21st bday!!! And as gift to her a few of the homies got together to give the park a small facelift in the form of a new 1/4 up the wall that doubles as a hip to blast out of opening up the lines to get some new shred on. This was all made possible by the hard work of the locals with the money YOU have donated. Well, it's finally hit home, the SHITTY economy is making it hard to generate enough money to keep putting out FREE printed issues of SAUCE skateboard zine. My wages and hours have been drastically cut at the printshop forcing me to "Reinvest" my life to learn a new trade that I can once again make the BIG Bucks so I can dump it all into the mag. This is not a statement implying that we are done making "Printed Issues" but rather an update on our status since a lot of you are itching for a new issue (as well as myself). I'm toying with a couple new SAUCE printing ideas such as a "Semi Annual SAUCE skateboard book" or the possibly reverting back to BLACK and WHITE (though thats a hard one to deal with getting away from full color print and all) So for now, I'm working with new design / layout ideas for this SAUCE Blogspot aka the "SAUCE skateboard On-Line zine" making this a nice place to publish our skate news, material, and photographs about whats going on in the world of Shred! Just a temporary fix or substitute for the printed version. The good thing is that we can now have the WHOLE world reading and shredding with us in cyber space. So please put us in your BOOKMARKS and stop by regularly to check in and we are also keeping the SAUCE Store going to help generate money for future printed material as well as to help with gas for trips, money for crete, and keeping our camera equipment and computers up to date and in good working order so we may provide you with some "Daily Shred" to go along with your morning coffee.

I'm not thrilled at all about not having a new printed issue (at the present time) but at least we can still keep moving forward with the SAUCE project via cyber space until enough loot is earned to print the next issue or book. At any rate, please comment with any ideas, concerns, and places that may want to cut us a serious deal on printing. Now get out there and SHRED!

CALTRANS has put a stop to yet another D.I.Y. spot, SNATCH in San Diego! Skaters hunt and seek out the worst possible spots to build things to skate. I mean, turning dumps, drug infested wastelands, and just fucked up unused areas that dont apeal to anyone but a skater, into a clean, organized, and FUN places to ride. Sergej Vutuc from Bosnia and friend Lars Greiwe from Germany have made the trek to the USA to skate all of our neat terrain as well as promote Sergej's Photography and book release "Something In Between" I finally got to meet and hang with the duo. though we didnt get a chance to skate as they were cut short on their Portland stay and off to NYC. Turns out that they arrived into New Jersey and roadtripped around the WHOLE country!!!! Right on dudes!!! World travelers? YES!!!! Shooting photography, skateing, and making new friends is what life is all about!! Oh and a mandatory stop at Portland's OG Boobie Club, Mary's Club (this was the last time we hung out. Did they make it out alive? Hahaha Now I guess it's my turn to come and visit...............
